Stress & burnout

Coaching, counseling and psychotherapy for stress and burnout

Everyone needs a certain amount of stress in their life to feel happy, motivated, challenged, and productive. However, when stress becomes excessive, lasts too long, or becomes overwhelming, it turns into unhealthy stress. This can lead to a buildup of tension and the development of various mental, emotional, and physical symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and reduced performance.

Stress overload, exhaustion and burnout are serious issues that are increasingly common in our society, with significant consequences for our lives and well-being. Whether it involves daily worries, intense pressure, or major life events, stress is a normal response to the demands of modern life.

Work, financial worries, relationship issues, a busy family life, family matters, social obligations, and health are just some of the factors that contribute to stress. Finding a healthy balance between work, personal life, and relaxation can be challenging. This can lead to stress overload, exhaustion and, ultimately, burnout.

Restore your balance

It is important to take signs of stress and overload seriously and to seek professional help when needed. By taking appropriate measures and adjusting your lifestyle, you can recover and prevent stress exhaustion and burnout in the future. There are various methods and techniques that can help reduce stress and restore balance in your life. Coaching and counseling are effective tools for managing stress and burnout.

During a coaching program, you gain insight into the causes of your stress exhaustion and/or burnout, and the impact they have on your life. You’ll take focused steps to reduce these sources of stress and develop effective coping strategies. Together, we’ll discuss your goals and preferences, what you’d like to achieve, and set the priorities that matter most to you. With concrete steps, you work gradually to rebuild your energy, manage your stress, and create a healthy, enjoyable balance in your life.

Am I Experiencing Burnout?

A burnout is a severe form of stress caused by prolonged exposure to high levels of stress. It is characterized by extreme fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and reduced performance, often as a result of prolonged stress at work or in daily life. People experiencing burnout often feel drained, powerless, and as if they have no energy left for anything. If you are suffering from burnout, it is important to take appropriate measures to improve your well-being and allow for recovery.

There are various symptoms that can indicate a burnout. These can be mental, emotional, or physical. For an overview of common symptoms and causes of overwhelm and burnout, see this page. This can help you make an initial assessment of whether you are experiencing stress exhaustion or burnout, or simply going through a period of high stress.

    Work-related stress

The numbers don’t lie. A recent study by TNO, commissioned by the government, shows that stress has become the number one occupational disease: no less than 36% of work-related absenteeism is caused by work stress. Over 1.3 million Dutch people experience burnout symptoms to varying degrees—they feel tired and exhausted. This not only affects their performance, but also their emotional engagement and connection with their work, colleagues, and the organization they work for. They feel drained mentally, emotionally, and physically.

The good news is: you can take action by exploring and addressing the causes of your work-related stress, implementing appropriate measures, and seeking professional help if needed. Common themes in work-related stress include:

    • high workload

    • high job demands

    • lack of control and autonomy

    • unclear goals and expectations

    • perfectionism

    • overinvolvement

    • high achievement drive

    • difficulty setting boundaries and being assertive

    Stress in your personal life

Personal circumstances can also lead to a significant amount of stress. We all experience stressful events from time to time, which we can often manage and cope with despite the discomfort. However, if the stress becomes too intense or persists for too long, it can build up internally and lead to serious mental and physical health problems.

It is important to take these symptoms seriously and take timely action to reduce stress and restore balance in your life. Common themes in personal life include:

    • relationship problems

    • financial worries

    • family matters, such as conflicts, caring for ill relatives, or raising children

    • grief and loss, such as the loss of a loved one, a divorce, or any other form of loss

    • health problems

    • perfectionism: the need to do everything perfectly

    • unrealistically high expectations of oneself

    • difficulty setting boundaries and being assertive

    • trying to juggle too much

    • lack of self-care

    • work-life imbalance
